The controls section is only 8 questions, but you must get 6 right, and most of them hinge on a numbered diagram of a car's dashboard and pedals. Learn this list until you can recite it from the number alone:

  1. Rear-view mirror – the interior mirror on the windscreen.
  2. Wiper – clears rain and dirt off the windscreen.
  3. Exterior mirrors – the side mirrors (both carry the number 3).
  4. Steering wheel – steers the vehicle in a particular direction.
  5. Indicator – the stalk that signals your intention to turn or change direction.
  6. Gear lever – selects gears.
  7. Parking brake – holds the vehicle stationary when parked.
  8. Clutch – the left pedal; disengages the engine for a gear change.
  9. Foot brake – the middle pedal; reduces speed or stops.
  10. Accelerator – the right pedal; increases or decreases speed.
  11. Hooter – the centre of the steering wheel; gives a warning signal.

Two groupings catch people out. First, the mirrors are 1 and 3 (not 2, the wiper). Second, the pedals are always, from left to right, clutch 8, foot brake 9, accelerator 10 – an automatic simply has no clutch. Everything else (4, 5, 6, 7, 11) is a hand control.

The manual stresses that although layouts differ between makes and models, the functions stay the same – so the question is never about where a control is in a particular car, only what it is and what it does.
