Signals and turning

Not started

Signal every change of direction or speed, know the hand signals, and position correctly for left and right turns.

You must always signal your intention to change direction, slow down or stop, clearly enough for other road users to see, using indicators, brake lights or hand signals. Signal in good time, before you begin the manoeuvre.

Hand signals (right arm out of the window):

  • Stop: arm raised straight up, palm forward.
  • Slow down: arm extended, palm down, moved slowly up and down.
  • Right turn: arm held straight out horizontally.
  • Left turn: arm extended with the hand rotating in an anti-clockwise circle (a motorcyclist bends the arm and points left).
  • You may overtake: arm extended, swept forward in a circular motion.

Hand signals may not be used on a freeway except in an emergency. Indicator lamps must be visible from 30 m in daylight.

Turning left. Signal early and keep as close as possible to the left side of the road. After turning, adjust your speed to merge with the traffic.

Turning right. Signal early and keep as close as possible to the centre line (the right side of your half of the road). Yield to oncoming traffic. Turn so that you enter the left side of the new road, crossing its centre line, and pass left of any traffic island or officer.

U-turns may only be made where safe and not prohibited by a sign, and only across a broken line.

Obey any mandatory direction arrows in your lane.
